December at the Altar: Closing the Year and Clearing the Space

December tends to bring a sense of closing out — the year's work, unfinished business, what was promised and what wasn't yet. Many devotees use these last days for a cleansing of the altar and the space where they pray — not as a guarantee of anything, but as a way of starting the next year with the place in order.

A simple altar arrangement

A more thorough cleaning than usual: removing spent veladoras, washing the glass holders, changing the water, clearing a year's dust.

Santa Muerte, this year is ending and I want to leave the altar in order.

What was granted, thank you. What wasn't, I leave it here, without demanding anything of the year ahead.

May the space be clean for what comes next.
