How to build an altar at home

From scratch, with the essentials — no need to buy everything at once.

Complete Santa Muerte altar with veladoras, flowers, fruit, and incense
An example of a complete altar, with every element from this guide
01

Choose a fixed, visible spot

The altar is usually placed somewhere high up, in a part of the house where it can be visited regularly. Many devotees avoid hiding it — the Niña Blanca is received openly, not in secret.

02

Place her image

A statuette or image is the center of the altar. Many devotees clean it carefully before setting it up for the first time, as a gesture of welcome.

03

Light a veladora

The color is chosen based on the petition of the moment. Some devotees set up a small triangle with three candles — white, black, and the color of their petition — for general protection.

04

Offer fresh flowers

White or red roses are the most common. They're replaced before they wilt — a wilted flower on the altar is considered bad energy.

05

Add fruit, incense, and a drink

Apples, copal incense, and a glass of tequila, wine, or water are traditional offerings. They're changed regularly — never left to spoil in front of her.

06

Keep it up consistently

An altar isn't something you set up once. The relationship is sustained through regular visits, renewed veladoras, and gratitude when a petition is granted.
