What is a novena?
A novena is a prayer practice sustained over nine consecutive days, dedicated to a single petition. It's a common tradition within popular Mexican Catholicism, and many Santa Muerte devotees adopt it the same way.
How it's structured
Each day a veladora is lit — sometimes the same one, sometimes replaced daily — and the same petition is repeated, without changing it partway through. Consistency, more than the intensity of any single day, is what sustains the practice.
When a novena is used instead of a simple prayer
Novenas are usually reserved for deeper or more urgent petitions — a serious illness, a drawn-out legal problem, a major life decision — not for everyday requests that a single veladora can handle.
At the end of the nine days
Many devotees close the novena with explicit thanks, whether or not the petition has been granted yet — as an acknowledgment of her company throughout those nine days, not only of the final result.
